The following is an excerpt from a recent sermon series I did @APCofCburg. I pray that you would not feel alone, isolated or abandoned. For God is always with you! But I also want to make sure that you know that we (the church) are here for you also. If you’re not connected with a body of believers, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will personally connect you with a local church body that you can find fellowship and community.
As a preacher and teacher, I often like to describe the various roles and attributes of our God. Perhaps even in our conversation, descriptive words about the God that we serve are used. You might even have some of your favorite words printed on a coffee mug or a t-shirt, or maybe hanging on some art in your home or office.
In fact, every once in a while, you just need to brag on the greatness of your God! You just need to testify to someone, to tell them just how good your God is! If you’re having trouble thinking of an exhaustive list of descriptive words of God, a quick internet search will give you thousands of sites to give you some ideas of ways that you can create your very own list. Since this is Church A-Z, I figured I would give you my own personal list…from A-Z of course:
- Advocate
- Beginning
- Counselor
- Deliverer
- Everlasting
- First
- Governor
- Holy One
- Immanuel
- Judge
- King
- Lord
- Mediator
- Name above all names
- Omega
- Peace
- Quick
- Redeemer
- Sacrifice
- Truth
- Undefiled
- Vine
- Way
- Xtra
- Zion
However, it’s interesting though, that there’s one adjective, one descriptive word, that most likely would never show up on anyone’s list in their attempt to explain the dynamic features of God! And before I tell you the word, let me explain why not. In my opinion, it is because all of the previous descriptions I listed are soothing to us. They are accommodating. Honestly? They benefit us…they give us peace and comfort.
These are words that are marketable…these are adjectives that we can use and put on wall art that you can buy in Hobby Lobby…these words give us the feels…but let’s read something from God’s word…
Colossians 1:13-17 (KJV) 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
This passage of scripture, gives us tremendous joy! It gives us reason to shout. It gets us excited…because we’re talking about THE Creator…THE Redeemer…THE One who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light…but just wait one moment, because there’s also a descriptive word in this passage of scripture, that we’re probably not going to use…that we’re probably not going to put up on a display in Hobby Lobby, but yet, is one of the most glaring and obvious features of God.
And that word, that adjective is…INVISIBLE. Yes. That is correct. The INVISIBLE GOD.
To be continued…
